Time for another review! Today we’ve got The Out-of-Towner: Gruyere and Swiss Grilled Cheese with Salami and Basil. It has been a minute since I have reviewed anything from Grilled Cheese Social but that doesn’t mean I am not on that website more than once a week. And if you’re not following along on her Instagram, you probably should because it’s so much more than grilled cheese. My last gc review was Thin Me up and Watch Me Go, one full of really good flavours, so I recommend you check that out too.
Where do I even start to describe this sandwich? I guess I can start by telling you the modifications I had to do because I live in a small town and didn’t have access to all of the ingredients. So first thing’s first, our store didn’t have French bread. I know, I know. So I found a bakery baked unsliced white bread and cut it a little thicker at home. And now I have bread to make meatballs with (I’ll share the recipe with you sometime soon).
On to gruyere. I’m so confused by this cheese, and I’m sure a little Google search would help me out but I was hungry so instead of buying Swiss AND Swiss Gruyere, I just bought plain old Swiss. Is there anyone who can tell me what the deal is here? Thanks in advance. And before I forget, Swiss slices were on sale so I cheated and bought those instead of actually shredding a brick myself. Don’t hate.
Okay, where was I? Right, after the cheese comes the salami. She says to choose any one that you like so I got hot. And dang, was that a good choice!
The fresh basil gave it a bit of a freshness that made it feel less like you were eating a ton of meat and cheese, which is always a bonus.
I have never fried a sandwich in olive oil up until this point in my life and this will not be the last. Definitely a good way of grilling! I approve.
All in all, this sandwich was super easy to build and there wasn’t anything about the taste that I would change! I just need to remember to preheat the oven earlier so that my sandwich press can actually do it’s job properly.
I hope you all go out and get these ingredients this week for a nice weeknight GC! Let me know what you think in the comments below.
